What does wellness mean anyway?

People use the word ‘wellness’ in many different ways. Sometimes, it’s code for weight loss and dieting. Sometimes it’s just facemasks and pedicures. For us, wellness is unique for each person, and their journey is their own.

That’s why we don’t advocate for a specific diet or dieting in general. We believe that weight loss isn’t the focus. Wellness should include many aspects of a person's well-being not just the numbers on their scale. Things like the quality of sleep they get, the amount of exercise they do, and more are included under the umbrella of wellness.

People like using weight loss because it’s easy to measure, it’s easy to see progress, and it’s easy to set goals, but health and wellness are much more complicated than that. Society’s focus on dieting and diet culture isn’t healthy for anyone, so we think it’s much better to concentrate on developing healthy habits rather than dieting and weight loss.

We believe that wellness encompasses many different aspects of a person's life and health choices. From their sleep hygiene, to their internal self talk, wellness is a broad and very individualized topic for everyone.

Most importantly, people should be talking to their healthcare professionals before making any major health changes. And wellness needs to be specific to the person and their individual goals.
